Shaxian Fm
Type Locality and Naming
Western Fujian. The Shaxian Formation was named by the Geological Survey Team in 1966. The type locality is in Shaxian of Fujian Province. The key section is the Shaxian section, 3 km north to the Chaxian town of Fujian (117°48’, 26°26’).
Lithology and Thickness
The Shaxian Formation is mostly composed of purple red muddy siltstone intercalated with thick-bedded sandy conglomerate, feldspar quartz sandstone and thin-bedded tuff in the middle. The formation yields gypsum locally. It is 310 to 2634 m in thickness.
Relationships and Distribution
Lower contact
The Shaxian Formation conformably contacts with the underlying Junkou Fm.
Upper contact
The Shaxian Formation conformably contacts with the overlying Chongan Fm.
Regional extent
It is distributed in the Shaxian, Chongan, Yongan, Ninghua, Liancheng, Longyan, Zhangping, Shanghang and Taining areas.

Fossils
The Shaxian Formation yields fossils of ostracods Mongolocypris tera, M. longa, M. bona, Candona nitida, C. sinensis, Cypris sp., Cyprinodus sp.; conchostracans Tenuestheria tenuis; plant Pagiophyllum sp., Brachyphyllum rhombimaniferum; charophyte Obtusochara sp., Aclistochara sp., Charites sp., Sphaerochara parvula, Euaclistochara mundula, Mesochara sp., Maedlerisohaera sp.; gastropods Galba cf. yongkangensis, Viviparus cf. zhejiangensis; bivalves Plicatounio naktongensis, P. fujianensis, P. multiphicatus, Trigonioides (kumamotoa) mifunensis, T. matsumotoi.
