Shaxian Fm

Period:
Cretaceous

Age Interval:
Cretaceous, Ks, (37)

Province:
Fujian

Type Locality and Naming

Western Fujian. The Shaxian Formation was named by the Geological Survey Team in 1966. The type locality is in Shaxian of Fujian Province. The key section is the Shaxian section, 3 km north to the Chaxian town of Fujian (117°48’, 26°26’).

Lithology and Thickness

The Shaxian Formation is mostly composed of purple red muddy siltstone intercalated with thick-bedded sandy conglomerate, feldspar quartz sandstone and thin-bedded tuff in the middle. The formation yields gypsum locally. It is 310 to 2634 m in thickness.

Lithology Pattern:
Fine-grained sandstone

Relationships and Distribution

Lower contact

The Shaxian Formation conformably contacts with the underlying Junkou Fm.

Upper contact

The Shaxian Formation conformably contacts with the overlying Chongan Fm.

Regional extent

It is distributed in the Shaxian, Chongan, Yongan, Ninghua, Liancheng, Longyan, Zhangping, Shanghang and Taining areas.

The Shaxian Formation yields fossils of ostracods Mongolocypris tera, M. longa, M. bona, Candona nitida, C. sinensis, Cypris sp., Cyprinodus sp.; conchostracans Tenuestheria tenuis; plant Pagiophyllum sp., Brachyphyllum rhombimaniferum; charophyte Obtusochara sp., Aclistochara sp., Charites sp., Sphaerochara parvula, Euaclistochara mundula, Mesochara sp., Maedlerisohaera sp.; gastropods Galba cf. yongkangensis, Viviparus cf. zhejiangensis; bivalves Plicatounio naktongensis, P. fujianensis, P. multiphicatus, Trigonioides (kumamotoa) mifunensis, T. matsumotoi.

Age

The paleomagnetic data shows that the sedimentary time of the Shaxian Formation is 105-70 Ma [In the long-normal-polarity Zone => not very useful.] (Hu Lianhao et al., 1990). It is of latest Early Cretaceous to Late Cretaceous age.
